Our AI fears: Murderous toasters or mass societal displacement?

“Unpacking the Impact of AI on Technology” on the Ecosystems podcast

“Any tool out there that’s worth its salt is going to have some form of artificial intelligence infused in it.”

Between the imagined threat of murderous toasters, the next horizon of artificial general intelligence (AGI), and deep, straight talk about the societal displacement that AI might wrought, this is by far the most reflective and philosophical Ecosystems podcast yet.

When Andrew’s great-grandfather first came to America, he left behind his village in Grundsund, on the west coast of Sweden, whose coastal waters had run out of fish. He left home in search of opportunity, with no thought that he'd ever return.

It's likely true that AI will, in the end, create far more jobs than it takes, but what is true at a macro-level can be absolutely life-destroying at an individual or community level. Are we ready? Is society ready for the displacement of the next big industrial revolution? Are we ready to leave that which is comfortable in search of more fish? Are our governments ready? Will we recognize the innate dignity in those who don't win this particular round of fabulous technological achievement?

Ana Welch, Mark Smith, Chris Huntingford, and Andrew Welch discuss...

The conversation addresses AI's impact on technology, debunking fears, exploring artificial general intelligence, privacy, and decision-making improvements. It discusses AI's potential for job creation versus displacement, comparing it to electricity's historical impact. The importance of adaptability, skill-upgrading, and supportive public policies during technological transitions is emphasized. The dialogue advocates for open discussions on AI's broad societal impacts.

What You Will Learn:

  • AI has changed the way companies and customers see technology, and there is a need to cut through the noise and fear mongering surrounding AI;

  • Education about artificial intelligence is crucial in addressing the fears and misconceptions associated with it;

  • Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a nebulous concept, and claims of reaching AGI should be met with skepticism;

  • Privacy is a complex issue, and the belief in having complete privacy is often a delusion;

  • AI has the potential to improve decision-making by eliminating biases and providing clear and precise answers… or to do the opposite;

  • The future of AI is both exciting and uncertain, with possibilities for positive advancements as well as potential negative consequences;

  • AI has the potential to create new jobs and opportunities, similar to how electricity revolutionized various industries;

  • The speed of technological change, particularly in AI, is a cause for concern as it may lead to rapid displacement of workers;

  • Individuals and society need to adapt and upskill to thrive in the era of AI and automation;

  • Public policies should focus on empowering individuals to care for themselves and their families during times of displacement;

  • Open dialogue and diverse perspectives are crucial for understanding and addressing the impact of AI on jobs and society.
